Journey was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Then they were selected to be one of 2017’s inductees. The other acts who will be enshrined in the Rock Hall are Pearl Jam, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez and Tupac Shakur. In addition to the aforementioned six acts, veteran musician and producer Nile Rodgers will receive the Award for Musical Excellence.
For me, Journey was the band that changed music from being something you heard while driving from point A to point B in the back your parent’s station wagon, or something you heard on an elevator, to being front and center. In my case, the music of Journey changed the path of my entire life. I imagine there was a band, artist, or song who did this for everyone at some point.
Now the “Gods” in Cleveland, Ohio have deemed them worthy enough to be enshrined in their building. What does this really mean? I mean honestly, what does this do for them? Yes, when someone is writing the copy for the commercial saying they are coming to a town to play a concert, they can add “Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Journey!! Big Whoop. Does it mean that I’ll be booking my flight to Cleveland to go see the Journey exhibit? Nope.
One thing it does mean, is now the speculation will start. Will Steve Perry join the band to receive the award? Will he play with the band at the induction? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then I’ll be tuning in to watch. If not, I’m sure there will be a ball game on that night that will draw more of my attention.
Mind you, I’m the biggest Journey fan I know (it’s true-Ed.), and that I’ve ever met. I’m just not a fan of the Hall. They’ve been inducting artists for 32 years now. And not just one or two every year. It’s been more like 6 or 7 a year. One can easily do the math, well, with the help of a calculator. Roughly 220 artists got in before my favorite band. My biggest problem, I guess, is with the name. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There are so many people inducted that really can’t be considered rock. If they went ahead and changed the name to the Music Hall of Fame I’d have a much easier time.
For me, when I heard the news Journey was going into the Hall I wasn’t overjoyed, relieved, and didn't feel vindicated. What I felt was more along the lines of going on Facebook and seeing the girl you had a crush on in high school who never had the time of day for you. You become friends and she likes a few of your posts. You have that feeling of “Ah-ha! See what you’ve been missing all these years!” That thought in your head passes by quickly because you’ve moved on and that girl really means very little to you.
I certainly hope Steve Perry plays with them, and it inspires them reform and to go out on tour. I’ll be the first in line for tickets. Not because they are in some silly museum, but because they are the founding members of my Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
